Which Takes Less Energy? AC Fan On or in Auto?

During the hot weather, using your air conditioning can be your highest monthly electrical cost. So, it’s only natural that you’re checking for approaches to save. That may include trying an energy-efficient AC setting or even making the switch to an ENERGY STAR®-rated unit with air conditioner installation.

Changing your air conditioning’s fan setting is a second way you can spend less money.

Your air conditioner works with a fan to deliver the cold air it creates. You manage this fan at your thermostat by switching it to “auto,” which indicates the fan will only be on when the air conditioner is going. Or you can switch it to “on,” which means it will operate continuously.

Does putting your AC on “fan” save energy in Mechanicsville? Not necessarily. Usually, running your air conditioner’s fan all the time is going to increase your energy bill slightly.

But it also gives a few pluses (and downsides) in regard to your family’s comfort. Here’s why.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “On”

Having your air conditioner’s fan run continuously can better stabilize your home’s comfort. This is great if you live in a two-story residence, since rooms upstairs can be hotter. It’s also great if you have difficulties with inconsistent cooling due to hot and cold rooms.

It’s also beneficial if one of your family members suffers from allergies, asthma or other respiratory symptoms. That’s because the air is constantly being circulated and purified. However, you may have to change your air filters more frequently.

Having the fan on constantly can also drive up your energy bills. It could also cause the fan to wear out more quickly and need air conditioning repair.

Your home may also feel muggier. Air conditioning helps control humidity by extracting moisture from the air. But if the fan is continually going, it’s more difficult for moisture to drip from the condenser outside.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “Auto”

This is the highest energy-efficient setting, because the fan will only run when your air conditioner does. It’s good if your residence always seems the right temperature, whichever room you’re in.

There are a few disadvantages to using the auto setting. You may experience hot and cold locations in your residence and decreased air quality. This is due to the fact air isn’t continuously flowing or being constantly purified.

On the other hand, you’ll require reduced energy and won’t need to get a new air filter as often. Both are savings that can tally up throughout the year, so you’ll have to think over what’s right for your needs.
